ZAC SMITH Zac Smith founded The Collective Sound Summer Music Academy in 1998 while attending CSU Chico. Growing up home schooled in a musical family he learned to play the guitar at a young age and decided to major in “Music Performance” and “Music Industry” at University. Learning about recording arts, composition and the music business is what inspired him to create an academy. From the beginning it was a place for youth to develop their creativity in a collaborative environment with other like minded musicians. It was designed to be an environment where students have guided access to the tools and resources necessary to bring their creative ideas to life both individually and as a group. Zac also founded a creative agency and production company while continuing his work with TCS. His professional career further reinforced the value of learning to collaborate creatively. His experience with recording, film, photography, the music industry, and contemporary/popular music proved important to his own success as an entrepreneur. Through those experiences, working with diverse clients and teams, he further realized the importance of developing the skills to formulate, communicate and execute creative ideas. The foundation of the The Collective Sound Academy curriculum is based on the concept of creative collaboration, which expands far beyond the bounds of music and into all industries where original ideas and creative problem solving are a factor. The fast paced guided discovery and DIY (do it yourself) approach to learning, mirror the constantly changing, real world landscape he has experienced throughout his career. The Collective Sound has remained a focus for Zac since its beginning and he has continued to lead the organization as it has grown both domestically and internationally. His vision is to help develop the next generation of artists and creative young minds, giving them the tools and skills to succeed in life. Along the way he will continue to bring his own creative ideas to life in the form of film, music, creative enterprises and art.
